Why it matters

At the end of the day we develop technology to help people in organizations cut costs, save time, improve their lives, etc.

If you do not know much about the subject matter at hand, you will have to spend a lot of time learning, and/or making mistakes, as each ecosystem has its own quirks, players, power dynamics, information flows, workflows, regulations, etc.

A common scenario is that people and organizations, assume that the new subject area will operate much like their previous subject area, and build solutions based on their previous approaches and assumptions, which fail miserably.
